Berg Ampato

Length: This mountain is accessible in two ways and the trip varies from 2 to 5 days.

Difficulty: Moderate-Challenging

Ampato 2 Days (From the east side of the mountain).  At 6am we leave Arequipa, arriving at the “Punta de Carretera” (4,800m), in about 4 hours. Then we walk in about 3-4 hours to the Base Camp at 5,400m.

The second day we leave early  in the morning, ascending to the summit about 5 hours, were we spend some 20-30 minutes. We then return to the camp to pack up the equipment and continue down to be picked up by our transport (in total the descent takes about 3 hours). At 6pm we arrive back in Arequipa. This tour can also be done over three days, depending on a person’s level of acclimatization.

Ampato 4 Days The ascent is made from the north side of the mountain, departing from the village of Cabanaconde (near the rim of the Colca Canyon). The trek to the edge of the mountain’s snow cap takes two days.

On the first day we make camp on the shores of the “Laguna de Mucurca”, where we can enjoy views of the spectacular scenery. The second day we make camp at 5,200m at the edge of the snow cap. Up until this point it is possible to travel with pack animals, which carry some of the equipment.

The third day we leave early to make the ascent to the summit, which takes about 5 or 6 hours. We head back down and spend the third night at the foot of the mountain, and on the fourth day we return to the village of Cabanaconde. This takes the whole day, although of course the return trip can also be made in 2 days, depending on each person’s condition.
